Barry War Museum

The Barry War Museum is dedicated to researching, preserving, and promoting the wartime history of Barry and its surrounding areas.

Our mission is to support schools and community groups in exploring local war history by hosting exhibitions and participating in heritage events to educate the public. We also aim to learn from those who experienced the war periods firsthand.

  • Evacuee Experience

    Our museum offers insights into the experiences of evacuees during wartime, highlighting the challenges faced by children and families seeking safety away from home. Through our exhibits, visitors can understand the personal stories of those who lived through these significant historical events.

  • Lest We Forget

     We honor the memory of those who sacrificed for our freedom. Our "Lest We Forget" section is dedicated to commemorating their bravery, ensuring their stories and contributions are remembered by future generations.

  • Military Speakers

    Our military speakers share firsthand accounts and insights into wartime experiences. Their stories provide a deeper understanding of the complexities and realities of military life during conflict.

  • Bevin Boys

    By 1943 and with World War II raging on, the British government had conscripted some 36,000 of its coalminers into the armed forces, leaving the industry short of experience and manpower.

    As a result, Labour politician Ernest Bevin, Minister for Labour and National Service, devised a plan that saw 48,000 so-called Bevin Boys conscripted to work down the nation's mines, with more than 20,000 of those selected randomly by ballot. Those who refused were sent to jail.
